What is GTM?
GTM is a tag management system that allows you to quickly and easily add or update code snippets such as third-party scripts for third-party widgets to add and integrate into your website like chatbots, or measurement codes and other code snippets collectively known when added inside a wrapper as “tags†in your website.
You can use Tag Manager's web-based user interface to set up tags (add new code snippets from suppliers),which can contain javascript, to embed and integrate the third-party widget script without needing to edit or change the website code. It’s also a means to test the snippet you may have been given before “publishing†it live to your website. You can create triggers that make your tag (with a third party widget script to embed in your website if you want it to) to fire when certain events occur, such as on loading the web page or when something else happens such as a button is clicked or a form completed.
In brief, it is a Google tool that allows you to install snippets of code that run on a web page and trigger on things in your web page, and you can test and manage the snippets from various sources all in one account.
Why should you use it?
You can use your GTM account to install third party applications to your website such as website chatbots, Facebook pixels, or review widgets, and specify what website pages they appear on.
You can even use GTM to install new design elements on your website pages, or install tracking codes to track certain events such as button clicks to aid with advanced website reporting.
It allows you to customise your website without incurring any development charges from Webdadi, as you can do it all yourself, or indeed get your third party providers to install their product using GTM directly, thereby simplify the process of installing any third party applications onto your website.
Note that Google Tag Manager or GTM is a free tool by Google. You can create a free account online using an email address and password.
